Lamborghini’s Humble Beginnings: Ferruccio and His Tractors

The 1963 Turin Auto Show was an event that saw the realisation of a dream that Ferruccio Lamborghini had nurtured for many years. After recruiting a team of talented designers, including Gian Paolo Dallara and Franco Scaglione, and four months of intense work, he presented the world’s first Lamborghini road car, the 350 GTV, to the media.

Although the unveiling was not without hiccups, most notably the absence of an engine (….), the car was well-received and the legend of Lamborghini road cars was born.

In the years that have followed, Lamborghini has grown to become synonymous with wealth and luxury. Stars like Jay Leno, Nicholas Cage and Ja Rule all drive Lamborghinis and the cars have been featured in everything from movies to rap videos.

Considering the glitz and glamour that often surrounds the vehicles that bear Ferruccio’s name, it may surprise some to learn that Lamborghini himself was a man of humble beginnings and that his bold, charging bulls were born out of a stable that was famous for producing hearty tractors as opposed to exotic supercars.

Make Your Car Sound Like a Lamborghini Gallardo for only 99¢ [Videos]

True, there are some ways to make your car's engine sound more sonorous, but there's really so much you can do for example to a Chevy Aveo or a Toyota Prius.

Furthermore, with a starting price of 99 cents, 2XCL Games' new XLR8 (get it; accelerate) sounds like a sweet bargain compared to the cost(s) of an actual mechanical component.

The XLR8 is an app available for Apple's iPhone and iPad as well as Android phones and tablets that promises to make your vehicle sound like an exotic Italian supercar, a muscle car or even a racing model.

After you download the application and place the phone in your vehicle, you simply connect the device to the audio system and you're ready to go – just don’t forget to roll up your windows…

"Once secured inside your vehicle, XLR8 uses the accelerometers of your device to realistically respond to acceleration, braking and cornering forces," explains the software provider. "It supports both cabled and wireless Bluetooth audio connections to your car stereo."

Lamborghini CEO Says SUV Could Launch in 2017 if it Receives the Green Light from the VW Group

There's no end to the news surrounding Lamborghini's upcoming SUV project, which will be previewed through a thinly disguised concept model at the 2012 Auto China Show in Beijing on April 23 to test the waters in the same way that Bentley did with the EXP 9 SUV study in Geneva this past March.

According to a report in the German business daily Handelsblatt, Lamborghini Boss Stephan Winkelmann believes that the SUV is a crucial model for the brand that has been losing money since 2009, and that VW will most likely give the green light, in which case, it could launch onto the market in 2017.

"We definitely need a third line in the mid- and long term," said Winkelmann. "An SUV would be the first Lamborghini for everyday use, not just for the race track or weekends. We would have the opportunity to win new customers. It usually takes 48 months until an all-new vehicle arrives at dealers, so the new Lamborghini would not be available to buy before 2017."

Amazing Video Shows Stunt Plane Racing Lamborghini Gallardo, is it Real?

This breathtaking video of a Lamborghini Gallardo racing an aerobatics stunt plane popped up online and grabbed our attention immediately, and all for good reason.

What's amazing about this race is that the airplane is actually filmed flying less than 10 feet (3 meters) from the ground, almost touching the Lamborghini with its wing.

While it looks to be real, we can't be 100 percent sure as we have yet to find any information on where and when this alleged stunt race took place.

If any of you happen to know something, leave us a message in the comments section below.

Batman, Your Ride has Arrived: New Lamborghini Ferruccio Design Study by Marc Hostler

In about 18 months from now, in October of 2013, Lamborghini will celebrate its Golden Jubilee. While we expect a fitting tribute from Lamborghini to mark the 50 years from the day Ferruccio Lamborghini launched the company that bears his name to challenge Ferrari, independent designers have already begun spinning their own tributes.

The Lamborghini Ferruccio concept pictured here is the work of Mark Hostler, a transportation design student at Staffordshire University.

Mazda MX-5 Almost Crashes Into a Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

Driving an exotic supercar like the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera through a parade of modded cars and an equally crazy crowd of people in a parking lot is just about as wise as taking your date to a sausage fest: someone is bound to hit on your gal.

And this is what almost happened to the owner of the white Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera when the driver of a second generation Mazda Miata wanted to show off with a little burnout that didn't go as planned just barely missing the Italian exotic.

Watch the short clip right past the jump.

Lamborghini Says it's Extremely Pleased with the Exposure it Received with the Aventador J

For the short amount of time it spent to design and build the one-off Aventador J (just six weeks, according to Lamborghini designer Filippo Perini), the Sant'Agata based supercar maker received a whole lot of attention for its creation at last week’s Geneva Motor Show.

Lamborghini even crunched out some numbers and facts to verify its claim:

• More than 21.5 million organic Google searches
• The most popular show-week YouTube sports car video; “Aventador J – The Making Of” currently has more than 280,000 views (category “Auto and Vehicles”)

Lamborghini Designer Says that Aventador J was Cooked up in Six Weeks

Can you imagine any automaker coming up with a new model in just six weeks? You read that correctly: an entire car, not its ashtray or a pair of steering column stalks.

Yet that this is how long it took Lamborghini to prepare its fully functional Aventador J speedster that caused a sensation at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Stephan Winkelmann, who ordered his cohorts to ready “something special” for Geneva, has served as a paratrooper in the German army for two years and his first job was at the German financial institution MLP.

However, Herr Winkelmann grew up in Rome, where he also studied Political Science, and was employed by Fiat for a decade before his appointment as Lambo’s CEO.

Not just any VW Group company, but a supercar manufacturer that was born out of Ferrucio’s desire to serve a cold dinner of revenge to none other than Enzo Ferrari.

Top Gear magazine interviewed Lamborghini’s designer Filippo Perini about the creation of the one-off hypercar.
