Honda Outlines Plans for China, will Debut Two New Concepts at the Beijing Auto Show

Honda has important plans set for the Chinese market over the next few years, as it will enhance its range with the introduction of more than 10 brand new or redesigned models from 2013 to 2015, while also increasing its local production capacity.

We'll get a taste of what Honda has in store for Chinese consumers at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show, as aside from the presentation of the CR-Z, Insight and Fit hybrid models that will all be launched onto the market this year, the company will also debut two new concept models.

The Japanese automaker isn't willing to reveal anything about the two studies yet, but it did release a pair of sketches that outline the shape of a minivan and a what is most likely a sedan model.

Honda CR-V Driver Loses Control and Flips Over at the Nürburgring Circuit

True, anyone can go to the Nürburgring in Germany for a quick lap around the world's most famous racetrack, but that doesn't mean they should overdo it as common sense says they must be cautious and know the their own as well as their vehicle's limits.

Plus, what looks like a regular, previous generation Honda CR-V equipped with a…sic bull bar isn't exactly the type of vehicle you’d like to push too much at high speeds on the Nordschleife.

The driver of the Japanese crossover lost control of the vehicle as he came out of a quick corner and ended flipping over the guardrail. The accident, as you can imagine, is a very scary one indeed.

New Study Finds that Only a Third of Hybrid Owners Buy Hybrids Again

As it seems, the majority of hybrid car owners in the States don't go for seconds, or at least that's what a new study released today by auto research firm Polk reveals.

According to the report, while the number of hybrid models in the U.S. has more than doubled since 2007, only 35 percent or a little over a third of hybrid vehicle owners choose to purchase a hybrid again when returning to market in 2011.

To make matters worse, Polk says that if you exclude the high volume audience of Toyota Prius owners from the equation, hybrid loyalty drops to under 25 percent!

Honda's April Fool's Day Anti-Theft Negotiator

Yes, yes, we know that April Fool's Day is done and gone for 2012 but this is one trick video that somehow escaped our attention, and since there's a good possibility that some of you may not have noticed it as well, we thought we'd share.

Hop over the break to meet TERII, Honda's "most advanced vehicle theft-deterrent system ever made" in the video that follows.

2013 Honda Crosstour Concept Shows up with a Fresh Face at the New York Auto Show

If you were looking for Honda to present a brand-new Crosstour model at the New York Auto Show, you lucked out.

What Honda brought to the Big Apple is essentially a subtly refreshed version of the current Crosstour, which launched in the market in December of 2009 amidst snarky criticism about its looks.

Most changes can be found up front where the Crosstour gets a new chrome grille that's pushed back along with a more rugged-looking bumper with pronounced fog lamp housings and a protective plate.

At the back, even though you may not notice it, Honda says there's a revised tailgate that sports "a more horizontal design to add visual width to the sculpted lines at the rear", while the bumper has also been redesigned and features the same black moldings as the front bumper.

The new contrasting moldings on the doors and the redesigned alloy wheels complete the exterior revisions for the 2013 model.

First Official Photos of the Honda Crosstour Concept, 2013 Ram 1500 and 2013 Lexus ES Leaked?

The automotive pundits over at Cheersandgears seem to have scored a hatrick of scoops publishing what they claim to be, the first official shots of the Honda Crosstour Concept, the 2013 Ram 1500 pickup truck and the 2013 Lexus ES sedan, all of which are set to make their world premiere at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, April 4.

Beginning with Honda's concept model, if this image is indeed real, then the Crosstour study is nothing more than a light facelift of the current model with a revised snout sporting a new chromed grille and a more rugged-looking front bumper, plus different wheels and protective black cladding all around.

The second picture allegedly shows us the 2013 Ram 1500 pickup truck, which looks like it gains a reshaped crosshair grille with a full-chrome treatment (at least on this edition), new headlamp fixtures, possibly featuring LED daytime running lights, and a redesigned bumper with new fog lamps.

The Chrysler Group has already revealed that the 2013 Ram 1500 will get a new 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar V6 matched to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Porsche 911 Turbo S Vs. Twin Turbo Honda NSX with 700Hp

We all know (or should know) that any car is as good as its driver. This is why surprises can, and will, happen often in races between cars that are not equally matched on paper.

In this 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) drag race, a completely stock Porsche 911 Turbo S rated at 530-ponnies doesn't seem to stand much of a chance against a heavily modded Honda (Acura in North America) NSX sporting a twin-turbocharged V6 that pushes out 700-horses to the rear axle, but numbers alone can be deceiving.

Sprint over the break to watch the video of the race and how it wend down.

Honda to Recall 554,000 CR-V and Pilot SUVs in the States Over Headlight Glitch

Honda has just issued a voluntary recall for approximately 554,000 SUVs in the United States to address a potential problem with components of the headlight wiring system.

The recall affects 2002 to 2004 model year CR-V crossovers and 2003 model year Pilot SUVs.

"There is a potential failure with the wiring of the headlight switch which may cause the low beam headlights to become inoperative," the Japanese automaker said in a statement adding that it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this issue.

Honda to Build Fit at New Plant in Mexico Starting from 2014

With Japan becoming the Land of the Rising Yen, more and more automakers are moving production outside the country to improve their profit margins. On Wednesday, Honda laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new production plant in Celaya, Mexico.

The new factory will become operational in 2014 and among other cars that will be produce there is the subcompact Fit (named Jazz in other markets) for the Mexican, U.S. and Canadian markets, as well as other regions.

Karma Strikes Again: Civic Driver Chasing Scooter in Tawain gets What he Deserves

One can only speculate what took place before we see the black car, which looks like a previous generation Honda Civic hatchback, madly chasing a scooter on a road in Taiwan, but the driver's intentions are clear.

Luckily for the person on the scooter, the car driver miscalculated the gap between the parked cars on the side of the road and the yellow vehicle in front of him (or her), and ended up crashing.

Houston Police Show us how Thieves Can Strip a Honda Accord in Less than 10 Minutes

We don't know if you've seen this video that was sent to us by Carscoop reader Matt R., but it's pretty darn impressive.

Back in 2010, the Houston Police Department's Auto Theft Division teamed up with Allstate Insurance to demonstrate just how fast your vehicle can be stripped down to the bone for parts using an older generation Honda Accord sedan.

Three workers from auto body shops in Chicago were able to complete the feat in a mere 8 minutes and 19 seconds! Hop over the jump to watch the video.

Honda Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain 2006 CR-Vs Because they Could Lose Control

Owners of the 2006 model CR-V crossover in the Unites States will soon receive a notification from Honda to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealer for inspection.

The reason why Honda issued the voluntary safety recall on 1,316 examples of its model-year 2006 CR-V is a potential problem with the right front lower control arm that could cause the vehicle to go out of control.

Honda will voluntarily recall 1,316 model-year 2006 CR-V vehicles in the United States to inspect and, if necessary, replace the right front lower control arm.

New Honda Crosstour Concept to Debut at the 2012 New York Auto Show

It seems like only yesterday that Honda presented the Accord Crosstour, which soon after dropped its Accord moniker and is now simply known as the Crosstour.

To be precise, it's been two years and a couple of months since its market launch in the States, which is very short time in automotive years, but not soon enough for a replacement if you ask (most) Honda fans.

Today we learn that Honda has green lighted a successor based on the soon-to-be revealed ninth generation Accord, the coupe version of which was previewed through a concept model at this year's Detroit Motor Show.

Honda S2000 Does Crazy Wheelies but Loses the Race

In one of those "wait for it moments", a heavily modded Honda S2000 gave the crowd something to talk about at the TX2K12 drag race event in Texas this past weekend.

The tuned Japanese roadster model was up against a Toyota Supra in a quarter mile drag race. The S2000 shoot off as if someone put a firecracker up its tailpipe performing not one, but several wheelies.

As impressive as they were, the wheelies not only cost the driver the race but he almost lost control of the car. Videos follows after the break.

10 Ways to Market Like a Super Bowl Ad Agency

Finally, this year’s Super Bowl game was more exciting than the commercials. Although 60% of Americans state they would rather take a bathroom break during the game than watch the ads, hundreds of millions of dollars are spent every year. Fortunately, the ads now live on the Internet well past their 30 seconds of fame.
This year, large corporations spent upwards of $3.5M for 30 seconds of  commercial time. This translates into roughly a cost of 3 cents to reach every viewer! In fact, in the last 10 years, Anheuser Busch has spent the most–$239M–for Super Bowl ads. Unfortunately, except for their "Weego" commerical, it seems that their ad agency’s creative department took this year off.
Small business owners don’t have millions to spend on Super Bowl commercials. Nonetheless, it's fun (and sometimes useful) to look at successful themes and tactics that Superbowl marketing campaigns used this year. Here are 10 ways you can mimic the top spenders:
  1. Invoke nostalgia. Many commercials leaned heavy into the familiar trusted themes from the past. While it did seem strange that a Korean car company, Hyundai used the theme from the movie Rocky in its kick off ad, it was very effective (my son was whistling the tune well into the first quarter).  Honda showed Matthew Broderick skipping work for a "feel good" return to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Career Builder  played the theme from “The Odd Couple” in their ad. Retailer HH Gregg used the Beatles' iconic song “Help”.
  2. Show a social conscience. First watch the Groupon Super Bowl ad from 2011 and don’t do that. Bud Light scored big by using the “Weego” rescue dog for a cute ad with a reminder at the end to help this cause.
  3. Talk about your customers’ dreams. Many commercials tapped into what their customers dreamed about. Toyota Camry showed viewers the way they would reinvent things (Rain making us thinner or a DMV that actually gives good customer service.)  American Family Insurance predictably talked about "going to get your dream".
  4. Tap into the American spirit of rebuilding. Bud Light told viewers that “Good things come to those who wait…good thing that those people don’t work here.” Best Buy featured people that are amazing innovators. Clint Eastwood narrated a Chrysler commercial reminding the audience that the worst of the recession is over. He reminded viewers that “it's halftime in America.” Eastwood continues that “this country can’t be knocked out with one punch and when we come back, they will hear the roar of our engines again...” Look for a politician to use this at one of their rallies.
  5. Use current events. Maybe the Mayans were right about the end of the world in 2012.  Chrysler used this theme for their Silverado to the tune of Barry Manilow’s “Looks Like We Made It”. They included the iconic Twinkie that is rumored to last forever. In an election year, Pepsi’s "King’s Court Commercial" promised “Pepsi for All!” This may also ring true with the "Occupy" movement.
  6. Don’t use the same theme foreverGo Daddy’s sexy ads  stopped being intriguing this year and the Coca- Cola commercials with the polar bears were mostly uninspiring.
  7. Partner up (or better yet, relate your product to beer!) This year, GE partnered with Budweiser for an unusual mix. When people think about GE they typically don’t think about beer. It may not be a match, but the audience did take notice.
  8. Use surprise slapstick. Stonyfield’s Oikos yogurt featured John Stamos getting head butted by an actress. It may not have worked if he headbutted her.
  9. Continue online. Use social media tags in conjunction with advertising. Companies such as Audi (#SoLongVampires) and Bud Light (#MakeItPlatinum) were trending on Twitter. A few minutes after the Fiat Abarth commercial ad aired, I received an email from the company as reinforcement to watch the ad again and enter a new contest. Chevy featured its new car, the Sonic with its www.letsdothis.com campaign.
  10.  Use Vampires. When all else fails, feature vampires in advertising like Audi. This is a safe bet since every hit movie or television show last year seemed to include them.
What were your favorite Super Bowl commercials? What can small business owners learn from big corporate ad agencies about marketing?

Autocar India Awards 2012

Car of the Year – Maruti Suzuki Swift

maruti swift car of the year
The Swift won our Car of the Year in 2005. And it wins it yet again this time. Though the new Swift looks exactly like the old model, this car is a grounds-up new generation of the Swift. This model is based on an all-new platform and is now both longer and wider. The Swift’s interior styling, which is heavily borrowed from its Kizashi sibling, is now plusher.

The car is now sportier to drive and the 1.2 K-series petrol gets variable valve timing (VVT) to bump up power to 86bhp. The 74bhp 1.3 diesel Multi-jet engine remains largely unchanged but the carmaker’s effort to make the cabin a quieter place is evident. Maruti Suzuki has taken an already good car and made it even better by ironing out the flaws in the older car. Despite stiff competition this year from among nearly all the world’s majors, Maruti Suzuki’s new Swift shows the competition a clean pair of heels to pick up the prestigious award of the Bloomberg-UTV Autocar Car of the Year 2012.

Bike of the Year – Honda CBR250R

honda cbr 250r bike of the year
The Honda CBR250R came like a breath of fresh air for Indian motorcycle enthusiasts long stuck between underpowered city commuters and horrendously expensive imported superbikes. Here was a motorcycle that offered great styling, zippy performance, street-friendly handling with a price tag that did not need you to mortgage your house. The CBR250R has all the big bike visual cues with its VFR 1200 inspired headlamp and CBR1000RR fairing. It ticks all the right boxes in the design and styling department. For its combination of style, performance, streetfriendly handling as well as advanced technology at a decent price, the Honda CBR250R is the Bike of the Year.

Compact Car of the Year – Maruti Suzuki Swift

The Swift was already a favourite in the competitive compact car market. And the new Swift promises to continue Maruti Suzuki’s winning streak. Though the new Swift looks the same as the old car, it is a completely new model built on a new platform. Ride and handling have been tweaked and they are even better now. The new Swift is larger, more spacious, delivers better performance, has better driver dynamics and gives you enhanced fuel economy. The Swift, always a great car, is now even better and is quite definitely the Best Compact Car of the Year.

Mid-size Saloon of the Year – Skoda Rapid

Under the skin the Skoda Rapid is a VW Vento. However, dig deeper and the Rapid proves to be much more than a Volkswagen clone. Skoda has ironed out many of the Vento’s shortcomings. The diesel engine is more linear but just as punchy, the shorter geared petrol now works much better and ride and handling are much improved as well. Spacious, fast, frugal, reasonably well-built and good value, the Rapid has a lot going for it. In fact, it actually beats its twin to win the crown of the mid-size saloon Car of the Year.

SUV of the Year – Mahindra XUV500

The XUV500, designed and developed completely in-house, is a quantum leap forward by Mahindra & Mahindra – it’s the company’s first serious attempt at developing a global product. The price at which Mahindra has launched the SUV makes it shattering value-for money. You get a lot of car for the price. You get a fantastic-looking SUV that dominates the road with its presence. An excellent package makes the XUV500 a worthy winner.

Winners for the rest of the categories are as follows:

Best Styling & Design – Hyundai Verna

Best Value for Money – Mahindra XUV500

Best Variant of the Year – Chevrolet Beat Diesel

Best Driver's car – Ford Fiesta

Manufacturer of the Year – Toyota

Technology and Innovation award –  Audi A8

Sub-compact car of the Year – Honda Brio

Best Compact car of the Year – Maruti Suzuki Swift

Best Saloon car of the Year –  Skoda Rapid

Best Executive Saloon of the Year – VW Jetta

Luxury Saloon of the Year – Audi A6

SUV of the Year – Mahindra XUV500

Bike of the Year 2012 – Honda CBR250R

Premium Bike of the Year – Kawasaki Ninja 650R

Import Bike of the Year – BMW K 1600 GTL

Green Car Award – VW Passat for BlueMotion technology

Man of the Year – Pawan Goenka

Viewer's choice award - CAR – Mahindra XUV500

Viewer's choice award - BIKE – Honda CBR250R

Honda Brio vs Hyundai i10

The Hyundai i10 is easy to drive, has a strong fuel-efficient engine, a well-appointed cabin and thus a strong favourite in the small hatchback class. With regular revisions and facelifts it has managed to distance itself from the rest.
The Honda Brio though is keen on upstaging the Hyundai with its premium positioning. Both have 1.2-litre engines and what the Honda wins with size, the Hyundai claws back with content. With less than Rs. 20,000 separating the top-end versions, which car should you put your money on?
Design and engineering
The bigger Brio is 25mm longer and 85mm wider than the i10 and these dimensions give it a wide and squat stance, while the high-mounted headlights and a low grille give it a distinctive look. The 14-inch wheels and the sharply rising window line gives the Brio a very pitched-forward stance. The rear of the Brio, the full-glass tailgate looks quite funky and the fit and finish of the bodywork on the whole looks and feels great.
The i10’s looks on the other hand are not as sporty as the Brio’s, but its crisp detailing like the hexagonal grille and sharp headlamps mean it still looks quite fresh. The i10’s tall profile also points towards a well-packaged cabin and decent luggage space. A deeper floor in the boot also means larger bags can be squeezed in.
The Brio’s boot is comparatively small but once you get past the high load lip (for better chassis stiffness) you will be surprised how many bags you can load into it.
Under the skin both the cars are similar with a front-wheel drive, electric power steering systems, transverse motors and independent front suspensions with torsion beams at the rear.
Interiors
Step into the Brio and you will be surprised by the amount of passenger room on offer, which is more than many bigger hatchbacks. The driver gets a fantastic view and the driving position is spot on.
The i10 is tighter on the inside in comparison, but is reasonably spacious, with decent headroom. The i10’s high-set driver’s seat, though good for visibility, lacks thigh support and, like in the rear, the cushions feel a touch too hard.
The dashboard on the Brio is well built but it is clear where the fat has been trimmed. The absence of a full centre console and plastics and the colours on the dashboard don’t do the Brio any favours.
The i10, in comparison, has a fuller dashboard with a neatly laid air-con and music system and the dash-mounted gearlever leaves some storage between the front seats. The top-end i10 Asta offers you more features like Bluetooth connectivity, CD player, parking sensors and rear wash and wipe as standard.
Engine, gearbox and performance
The Brio uses the same 1.2-litre i-VTEC, single-cam motor as the bigger Jazz albeit in a milder state of tune in the interest of economy. It makes a healthy 88bhp and is compliant when you want some extra performance. However, it does lack some low-speed punch and the slightly taller first, second and third gears also mean you have to downshift more frequently. That said, the Honda motor is easily the more refined of the two.
The i10’s Kappa2 motor, on the other hand, is much more responsive and the car jumps off the blocks with just an inch of throttle travel. Though the motor will rev till its 6700rpm redline, the problem is, past 4500rpm, the engine feels strained and doesn’t pull as cleanly to the top as the Brio.
Flat out, the i10 dispatches 100kph in 12.04sec, while the Brio takes 12.47sec to do the same. It’s same story with the in-gear acceleration times; the i10 is a nose ahead in the third and fourth-gear slogs
Ride and handling
As expected, both cars with their compact dimensions and light steering are easy to drive in the city. The Brio is fairly pliant and bad roads are soaked up quite well. The i10’s suspension, on the other hand, isn’t as well sorted as the Brio’s. It’s fairly comfortable at slow speeds but up the pace, especially on a bad road and the i10 doesn’t feel as settled as we would like, and this bobbing motion is enhanced when the car is loaded up.
But when in the mood, the Brio’s the one to choose. With its willing top-end performance, confidence-inspiring brake pedal and eagerness to tackle corners, the Brio feels a special little car. The steering has a slight dead zone at the straight-ahead position, but once you push the car harder and load up the suspension the Brio displays a poise, balance and confidence rarely found in a car of this class.
The i10 on the other hand makes you think a bit before pushing on – it’s got too much body roll, loses its poise quite easily and those ultra-thin, 155-section tyres run out of grip alarmingly early.
Fuel efficiency
Despite having 9bhp more, the Brio is slightly more efficient than the i10. City figures of 12.6kpl and 17.0kpl and a highway number of 11.7kpl and 16.0kpl for the Brio and i10 respectively reveal a small, but crucial victory for the Honda. Both cars though have 35-litre tanks which somewhat limits their range.
Verdict
The i10 is a thoroughly engineered product with good performance and practicality. Its appeal has always been its versatility and this still holds true. The top-spec i10 is superbly kitted and sets the standard for equipment and features in this class of car. It is decent value for money and promises a hassle-free ownership experience. The i10 though is nowhere near as fun to drive as the Brio and can’t match it in key areas like passenger comfort and ride and handling. The interiors are well built but point to a pared-down car. However, you can’t get away from the fact that the Brio is and feels like a car in a higher class and this big-car feel for small-car money is what clinches it for the Honda.
